Johannesburg, South Africa
We’ve been here for a couple of days now. We were incredibly jet lagged when we first got here so we stayed at a hostel by the airport for two days and just slept and relaxed after the long flight. The plane stopped in Dakar, Senegal, on the way from Washington and all in all we were in the air for 19 hours. Since I’m scared of flying it wasn’t all that pleasant. My parents...

Road Trip and DC
Since Becca’s plane almost crashed on her way to Miami she refused to get on a plane again. So we rented a car and let her drive us up the coast to DC. (We’re going to have to get drivers licenses till our next visit.) The first night we stopped in Palm Coast, where Becca’s relatives live. The house we slept in was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It wasn’t a...

Cayamo
So Cayamo 2012 was amazing as expected. The line-up wasn’t quite as good as last year, but the people I met before and on the cruise made this year so much better. First we had a couple of days in Miami with Rebecca, my sister Sandra and her boyfriend Jimmie. Kacie and Briana flew in from California and Texas the day before and it was so great to see them. Well, Kacie is officially my...

Miami Beach, Florida
We’re here! This is just a quick update. We wanted to tell our parents that we’re safe. I hardly remember flying at all. We were so incredibly tired (and I was drunk), so I wasn’t scared at all.  Miami is warm and windy and right now we’re waiting for Becca in the lobby of the hostel. My sister Sandra and her boyfriend Jimmie should be here sometime late tonight....

4 Days
So tomorrow we’re selling more of our stuff at the monthly flea market not far from where we live. After that we’re giving the rest away to charity. In the next couple of days I’ll meet family and friends to say goodbye. We’re going to clean the house. I’m going to pack up everything I haven’t sold and store it at my dad’s. We’re going to pack...

Advice #5: Insurance
Only a few days left till we head off. Still lots to do, but I guess it wouldn’t be our life if we weren’t late for everything. It has its charm …(?) So my final advice to you: Buy a travel insurance before you go, if your standard insurance doesn’t cover your whole trip. In Sweden we have to prolong ours from the 46th day we’re out of the country. Simply do not go...

Help Us Stop Forced Sterilization In Sweden →
This has nothing to do with our travels - this is so much more important than that. Please, take a moment to sign All Out’s petition to make our government, the Swedish government, stop forced sterilization on transgender people who want to change their legal gender in our country. Thank you, it really means a lot! alloutorg: Ask Prime Minister Reinfeldt to finally end forced...

Advice #4: Projects While Traveling
I love traveling in every kind of way, but having time off is not necessarily the thing I love most about it. And six months away from work, school or any kind of project is not something that will make me less restless, which is why I’ve chosen to take some distance courses while I travel. I’ll be studying French and English while I’m away, which is something I’m really...

Advice #3: Visas and Vaccines
Visa rules change all the time so it’s a good idea to always stay updated. Start getting your visas fixed a couple of months before you leave and always call all the embassies to ask. For countries like The United States and Australia you apply for a visa online and for some countries you have to hand in your passport at the embassy. Remember - most visas expire three months after issuance...

Advice #2: Saving Up and Spending Wisely
The most expensive part of traveling nowadays is most likely not flying (depending on where you go, of course). It’s accommodation. So if you know people around the world, that’s a great way to plan your route too. That’s what I have done and that’s what’s made it possible for me to work out the financial part. But it’s also the reason why I want to travel - I...

Advice #1: Transportation
I’ve been planning this trip for a very long time. The route has been changed several times, I’ve had many potential traveling companions and my financial situation has been up and down. But now I have a route, I have Frida who spontaneously decided to come with me and I think I have enough money saved up to finally do this. It’s going to be a budget RTW...

The New York Times: The 45 Places to Go In 2012 →
This article just happens to recommend some of the places we’re going to visit on our trip. #5 Oakland, California; #7 Tanzania; #28 Malacca, Malaysia; #35 Samaná Peninsula, Dominican Republic. Laughed a bit when I saw that they put Helsinki, Finland, as #2 and Dalarna, Sweden as #44.

Songs About Traveling →
I thought I’d share a playlist I put together with songs that in one way or another are about traveling. I’ll keep adding songs to it the next couple of weeks. (Instructions for any family members of mine who might see this: to get the music going, click the title of this post and you’ll be directed to my Spotify account.)

Trip Itinerary
February 2nd-February 4th: We have a few days in Miami before our cruise starts. We’re probably going to meet up with some friends and just relax on the beach with my sister and her boyfriend who’s coming to Miami too. February 5th-February 12th: The Cayamo cruise is basically a boat full of music-lovers and artists. 125 gigs in a week. Here’s the line up. And, most importantly,...

The Beginning
Only one month to go till we leave … And I’m panicking. To think I’ve been planning this for almost three years and still managed to postpone all the important planning till now. Procrastination. But at least we have our tickets. Frida has resigned from work. I’m finishing up everything in school. We have our African overland trip booked. We have Cayamo booked. We know...
